Story
Hi Everyone!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As those of you who know me will be aware, I hate running with a passion and even when I was at school (and supposedly fit) I could barely manage the lap round the hockey pitch to warm up before games. It therefore came as no suprise when I got assigned the position of goalkeeper. With this in mind, it may shock you to learn that on Sunday 20th September 2009, I intend to participate in the Great North Run - a 13.1 mile course from to .
The reason for this is a very important one - Cancer Research . Sadly, in the UK someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes and 1 in 3 of us will develop some form during our lifetime, just a couple of reason why cancer is the number one fear of the British public and tops the list over Alzheimer's, heart attack and terrorism. I'm sure we all know somebody who has been affected at some point whether that person is an immediate relative or a friend of a friend, for me it was my grandad (mum's dad) who I watched fight his battle with bowel cancer approximately 10 years ago. My nan on the other side of the family (dad's mum) also had bowel cancer and unfortunately passed away when I was 3 years old so, sadly, I don't remember her because it claimed her life whilst I was still so young. Although both my relatives were elderly when diagnosed, cancer affects people of all ages and creates unimaginable pain for loved ones.
I'm a firm believer that prevention is better than cure which is what makes Cancer Research UK such a fantastic charity and the reason why I have decided to put myself through what I have felt to be quite gruelling training in a bid to complete the course. However, without raising money it is all a bit pointless so I am writing to ask you to please sponsor me, every little does help and the work that they do is incredibly worthwhile. Plus I will really appreciate you rewarding my efforts!
Many thanks in advance!
Sam
