The Climbers

On 11th June 2010, we will be climbing Kilimanjaro, the Worlds highest free standing mountain, to raise money for the childrens oncology department within the new Childrens Hospital in Manchester. We would like to ask for your support for this massive challenge and help us raise as much money as possible.

The team consists of;

 - Kris Gleave         (30)
 - Gareth Marsden (23)

Why are we sposoring the Children's Hospital in Manchester?

Most people are aware that Booth Hall and Pendlebury Children's Hospitals closed down this year and have now been superceded by the new super hospital. We both have our own personal reasons for raising money for the hospital which have driven us to sign up to this daunting challenge. All of the proceeds raised will be dedicated to the childrens oncology department which treats childrens with cancer and tumors.

Kilimanjaro Facts

Even though many people attempt this climb each year, only 70% make it due to the altitude so it is a real struggle which we are 100% confident on reaching the top. Our ascent will be undertaken through Action Challenge and have signed up for the toughest Machame Route over 6 days to really make sure we're pushed to the limit...unlike the Radion one team and other celebs who climbed for Comic Relief taking the easiest Rongai route over 8 days!

- Rising 19,340 feet above see level, Kilimanjaro lies on Tanzania's northern border with Kenya
- It is one of the 7 Top Summits of the world and has the highest point on the African continent
- Kilimanjaro supports 5 major eco-zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers
- All climbers will suffer considerable discomfort, typically shortage of breath, hypothermia and headaches
- Temperatures at the foot of the mountain are around 30 degrees. The summit can be as low as -30 degrees!
