Story
Inspired by the many recent acts of kindness, courage and determination across the UK, on Friday 24 April we (Mark, Naomi, Matthew (15) and Yasmin (12)) will begin a 813-mile treadmill walk to raise money for the most vulnerable people affected by the COVID-19 crisis. This is equivalent to the length of the mainland UK from John o’Groats to Land’s End!
Taking turns and walking 24 hours a day, we hope to cover 75 miles (c. 3 marathons) on the treadmill each day, and the whole 813-mile route (31 marathons!) in 11 days.
While we’re in no doubt that the challenge will be incredibly physically and mentally tough, it doesn’t compare to the struggles of many people less fortunate than us. To support them, we have each chosen a charity: The Felix Project (fighting hunger), Age UK (supporting the elderly), Shelter (fighting homelessness) and Place2Be (supporting children's mental health). All four have launched emergency appeals in these difficult times and are in need of our support.
Links to more information on each charity and individual donation pages are here: Felix Project, Age UK, Shelter, Place2Be
Despite being on a treadmill facing the kitchen wall, Google streetview will allow us to take in the wonders of the A9, A6, A38 and all the other towns and sights en route! Once we are underway, you will be able to see how quickly (or slowly) we are progressing both day and night in three ways. Firstly, on twitter and instagram (@jog2le2020); secondly (for fans of slow TV) on facebook live (www.facebook.com/jog2le2020/), and finally, you can find where we are now by clicking this link: Progress to date
5/5 UPDATE: After 10 1/2 days, 813 miles and over 1,600,000 steps, we finally reached Land's End yesterday evening around 7.15pm for a well-deserved pizza. So far your fantastic generosity has helped Place2Be hit the £5,000 target, and hopefully Felix Project, Age UK and Shelter will get there over the next few days too!
Thank you for all your help
Take care
Mark, Naomi, Mattie & Yasmin
