My dad was as fit as a fiddle all his life and had never been in hospital in 83 years. He felt breathless whilst playing catch with one of my kids on May bank holiday so went to the Dr who found fluid on his lung.

He was put on the NHS cancer pathway, had surgery at Guys in July and was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in August.

Mesothelioma is a microscopic cancer of the lining of the lung and was caused by exposure to asbestos in the early part of his career on construction sites. It has been dormant for about 50 years and then appeared and progressed very quickly. He sadly lost his short battle and died on 21st November 2021.

It’s been an intense journey and I have needed to do something physically demanding to help my own mental health.

I've taken on the challenge to row (or paddle) 1 million metres in a year. I started on 1st September 2021 and have until 31st August 2022 to complete the distance.

Hasag & the Martlets have both been invaluable support.
