Story
Everyone needs social connections to survive and thrive. But as people age, they often find themselves spending more time alone. Being alone may leave older adults more vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation, which can affect their health and well-being. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risks for health problems such as heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline.
The indices of social isolation for Calderdale suggest that older people using social care are disproportionally affected against the national average when it comes to having social contact? The national average is 46% whilst the local figure is 53.7%.
At Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees, we have a number of activities that help enhance the social mobility of older people, ensuring that they feel valued and included in wider community life to increase their sense of belonging, and maintain social connections.
