Story
This year, Calvin and I will be raising money for the Nola to Angola charity bike ride. We are participating in this ride because we are living in a time where inaction is no longer an option. We feel that is is our duty as citizens of this country and former residents of New Orleans to promote organizations that unite and strengthen communities, and challenge institutions that sanction violence, racism, and inequality.
During pre-Covid times, participants would ride their bicycles from New Orleans to the Louisiana State Penitentiary which is located in Angola, Louisiana over the span of two days. "Angola", as it is commonly referred to, was built on the site of the former Angola plantation. Currently, "Angola" is the largest maximum-security prison in the United States. The ride from NOLA to Angola is 170 miles and the money that riders raise supports the long-term viability and expansion of the Cornerstone Builders Bus Project, an organization that provides free transportation for people to visit their incarcerated loved ones at the prison. Nola to Angola remains entirely volunteer-run.
This year, however, we will bike 170 miles each around the Houston, TX area and for the entire month of October. For every mile we ride, we are asked to raise $1 with the goal of reaching $170 each ($240 total). Please consider donating to the Cornerstone Builders Bus Project. You can follow our progress towards completing our goal on this page.
