Story
At just 4 days old, we were unexpectedly rushed by ambulance from the PRH Telford to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool.
When Georgia was born, and for the first few days of her life, there was nothing to indicate any problems. We were discharged after 2 days and headed home as a family. Within 24hours of being home she started being sick - a worrying luminous yellow colour. We sought medical help but were told she was ok and to only worry if it was a green colour. By the afternoon of the next day the sick was green! Thankfully the lovely midwives at Bridgnorth got us in at the PRH children’s assessment centre quickly where she was treated with antibiotics and given an X-ray. We were told we needed to go to a specialist children’s hospital - probably the next day - to rule a few things out. By 2am, we were being rushed by ambulance to Liverpool with dad following behind.
Unfortunately, scans revealed that Georgia had a twisted intestine and blocked bowel and needed urgent surgery. It all happened so quickly and we were beside ourselves with worry. This tiny baby who we had only just met and loved more than anything in the world was being taken away from us for emergency surgery. By 5am she was in theatre and all we could do was wait.
Thankfully, the surgeons found what they were expecting to see and were able to perform the corrective surgery needed. When Georgia came back to the neo-natal ICU she was so alert which was such a relief to us!
It was then a waiting game to see how long the bowel would take to restart but we were told it could be 2 weeks. After a few days worrying she wasn’t getting better, watching her connected to so many wires and listening my to all the machines beeping away, she made some massive improvements and was soon back to being able to breastfeed. A week after surgery, we were discharged.
We feel so grateful to all the surgeons and nurses who looked after Georgia and us during what was such a scary time. Georgia’s life could be a lot different now without them! The care, support and the whole experience of being looked after during our entire stay at Alder Hey was absolutely second to none.
We would like to raise some money to show our appreciation and help other families in the future who need to call on the amazing services and facilities of this fantastic children's hospital that the Alder Hey Charity helps to support.
