Story

In October we will be walking 100km each with our dog as part of #TeamMarieCurie. All the money raised will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support to people living with a terminal illness, and their families at the toughest time.

In Memory of Grandad ❤️

On 7th August 2025, our family was given the devastating news that our beloved Grandad had cancer.

Nothing can truly prepare you for hearing something like that, and from that moment our lives changed forever.

Despite the news, Grandad remained incredibly positive. He didn’t want to know a timescale. Instead, he wanted to carry on living in the moment and making memories with the people he loved. He was even planning ahead for Christmas something that he and my Nan had always made so magical for our family. That was just Grandad: hopeful, positive and always thinking about the people around him.

Sadly, on 14th September 2025, Grandad lost his battle with cancer.

We were all there beside him, holding his hand and surrounding him with love as he passed away. Although it was one of the most heartbreaking moments our family has ever experienced, I will always be grateful that we were able to be together and that Grandad was not alone.

The journey we went through as a family was incredibly difficult. Watching someone you love become so poorly is something that is impossible to put into words. There are moments of fear, sadness, uncertainty and heartbreak that you never forget.

Having already lost Nan the year before, this was an incredibly difficult time for our family. The overnight care provided by Marie Curie was truly invaluable. Knowing that someone was there through the night, when everything felt particularly difficult and frightening, gave us a sense of comfort and reassurance that we will never forget. It meant that we could focus on being there for Grandad and making those precious final moments together as a family, rather than feeling like we had to face everything alone.

Throughout those darkest moments, Marie Curie were there for us.

The nurses who cared for Grandad were truly incredible. They supported not only him, but all of us as a family. Their kindness, compassion and understanding meant more than we could ever explain. They stayed with us right through to the end, helping Grandad to be comfortable and ensuring that we could spend those final moments together as a family.

For that, we will always be incredibly grateful.

We are fundraising for Marie Curie because no family should have to face the end of someone’s life feeling alone. The work they do reaches far beyond nursing care they provide comfort, dignity, compassion and support during some of the most painful moments a family can ever experience.

Sadly, there will be so many other families who will receive the same devastating news that we did. So many people will face the heartbreak of watching someone they love come to the end of their life.

Marie Curie will be there for them.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, can help Marie Curie continue to provide the care and support that made such an enormous difference to our family. It can help another grandad, another nan, another parent, another child and another family have the comfort of knowing that someone is there when they need it most.

Losing Grandad has left a huge hole in our lives, and there isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t miss him.

But if we can turn some of our heartbreak into something positive, and help another family receive the same incredible care and compassion that we did, then that would mean the world to us.

This is for you, Grandad. ❤️
