Raising money for Bone Cancer Research Trust

Liberty's Legacy is a Special Fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust raising vital funds for life-saving research into Ewing sarcoma.

Story

Liberty's Legacy are thrilled to be one of the chosen charities for the GX FunRun in May 2022, a 5km race on closed roads around Gerards Cross.

By taking part in the GX Fun Run you will be helping fund life-saving research into Ewing sarcoma, the form of primary bone cancer that Liberty had. Your support will mean that the outcomes for other teenagers, children and adults facing Ewing Sarcoma are improved and our research will be able to continue, until there's a cure.

As many of you know, Liberty gained her wings in October 2017 after she fought a courageous 13- month battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of primary Bone Cancer, primarily affecting children and especially teenagers. Liberty had only just celebrated her 14th birthday 2 weeks before and our lives have been changed forever -  she has left a gaping hole that cannot be filled.

Throughout her treatment, Liberty was as an inspiration to so many with how bravely and valiantly she faced everything thrown at her. She refused to let this cruel disease define her and the smile for which she was so well known, as well as her wicked sense of humour rarely faded, despite everything she had to endure.

When Libs discovered that the cancer had spread and that nothing further could be done, her greatest wish was for no other young person or family to suffer as she had. And so her idea for Liberty's Legacy was born to raise awareness and vital funds for Ewings research in her name.

Since February 1st 2018, Liberty's Legacy has been a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, with all monies raised ring-fenced specifically for research into Ewing's, as was Liberty’s wishes.

The money raised to date, which as of April 2022 exceeds £550,000, have already helped to fund several exciting research projects. But it's just the tip of the iceberg and so much more needs to be done if we are to change the landscape for future children diagnosed with this brutal disease.

Survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in nearly 40 years and the treatment protocol that Liberty received was not only designed for adults, but was decades old. Yet last year research funding for primary bone cancer from the major cancer charities was at an 18 year low, representing just 0.028% of the overall cancer research budget. With your help we urgently need to change this, so that children like Liberty have a fighting chance - she had so much to offer and deserved so much more.

So on May 22nd we will be donning our bright orange Bone Cancer Research Trust tops with pride and many of #TeamLibs will also be sporting butterfly wings in Lib's memory - from a very young age she was absolutely mad about butterflies! The whole family want to say a HUGE thank you to all the runners who have agreed to join us and be part of #TeamLibs, we are genuinely so touched, it honestly means the world.

Liberty Grace Schurer, you are so deeply missed, more that you will ever know, and our hearts are forever broken. We love you to the moon and back, forever, and always will. I know you will be there by our sides on race day, supporting us just as you always have. We are determined to honour your amazing Legacy and will keep on fighting and raising funds in your name...#UntilTheresACure

Love forever, Mum, Dad, Liv & Bertiexx
