Story

Thanks for visiting our team page!

Here's Chris' story which has inspired us all to get involved...

My story begins back in the winter of 2007; I was living with my family in Cyprus and was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 19. After confiding in my Dad, he (along with my Mum and sister) supported me through appointments and an operation and I made a full recovery.

Cancer appeared in our lives again in December 2013. This time Dad was the target of the cruel disease. He and my Mum left the home he’d built in Cyprus to return to the UK for treatment under the NHS. He battled hard for two years, heading into hospital on numerous occasions with one operation lasting over twelve hours - a very invasive surgery. He made a recovery from the surgery, being told he would struggle to speak for the rest of his life - he showed us he wasn't ready to stay quiet and was chatting away just a few days after leaving the hospital. Unfortunately this wasn't the end of the battle for him as the disease spread to his lungs and we lost him on the 30th October 2015, my best friend.

During this time I had also moved back to the UK. After just over a year of Dad passing, now into February 2017, I was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Without my Dad, I knew this time round was going to be much harder to face. The grief of his loss was still so raw, I had only just started a full-time job and the fear of what lay ahead was very real. After many appointments and consultations, I had an operation and a single dose of chemotherapy.

I returned to work and fell into the pattern of three-monthly visits to Christies, then six months. In the New Year of 2018 Sarah and I decided to apply for the Australian working holiday visa and headed out in August. This is when I met Nathan, at Hannah’s wedding in Perth. He had been – and was still - battling cancer himself. We hit it off straight away; Nathan was easy going, a great laugh and fun to be around. We stayed in touch after he returned to the UK and messaged most days, unfortunately he passed away at only 22 years young.

I’ve set up this page to remember my Dad and Nathan and bring awareness that cancer has no age and can affect you at anytime. It’s the first fundraiser I’ve ever taken part in and I'm so grateful to have Sarah, Joe, Phil, Laura, Dave, Michael, Ben, Gabby, Georgia and Sanchia walking with me! Any donations are greatly appreciated.
