Story
Out of the blue in August, Ella caught an ecoli infection, we will never know how she caught it, it quickly developed into a serious condition called HUS ( haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome ) which destroyed her red blood cells and reduced her kidneys functioning to less than 5%.
Our 15 year old who should have been enjoying her summer job and at the beach with friends was blue-lighted with three paramedics and a nurse to Bristol Children's Hospital to receive life saving surgery. The doctors at Treliske told us without medical care she wouldn’t have survived. Without a doubt the scariest times of our lives.
After receiving platelets, bags of blood, an extended stay in hospital and at least five lots of dialysis it was time to return home. Stacey and I went to Marks and Spencer’s and bought the usual box of chocolates for the amazing selfless medical team at Bristol. It felt inadequate and not enough.
As I walked down the stairs I saw the poster for Wallace and Gromits Grand appeal bike ride from London to Paris in June 22, to raise much needed funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital. I signed up immediately. Time will tell if an overweight Cornish chap can pull it off.
I couldn’t do it alone, so I roped in my childhood friend and fellow Marazion boy Damo, to be my travelling companion… Damo is a keen cyclist and will certainly motivate me to pull my finger out as he knows how amazing the NHS are after saving his life by treating him for bowel cancer at the start of the COVID epidemic where he was faced with a do or die scenario… thankfully , the former was the case.
That’s enough of my wittering on… This isnt about Ella, Ellas treatment was the catalyst which inspired me to thank Bristol Childrens Hospital and try and raise a few quid for them. if you could dip your hand in your pocket and give a couple of quid to two slightly ( ahem ) overweight Cornish boys cycling from London to Paris to raise money for Bristol children’s hospital it would be so much appreciated, and give us extra inspiration whilst training. Feel free to share far and wide with family and friends as every penny counts and like us you never know when you need the NHS.
As well as / instead of sponsoring us, if you put a few pennies in the charity pot that supports Ronald McDonald house the next time you get a maccies, the charity work they do providing accommodation for parents of poorly children is also amazing.
Thank you so much
