Rewind to May, my perfect son was born and life couldn’t be better. Roll on 4 days later and my life would change forever.

I was admitted to hospital on 27th May with serious abdominal pain thinking they were just going to send me home with some pain killers to numb the pain. A few days and many x rays later, the consultants, doctors and surgeon gave the news that I had suffered with a toxic mega colon and a perforated bowel as a result of a flare up from Ulcerative Colitis.

Fast forward to 5th June, everything I thought was normal was going to drastically change as I had to have a life changing major surgery to have my entire colon removed and be fitted with a stoma bag. The surgeon who was the best ever, said that if it was left 1 more day, I may not have lived to tell the tale.

I had heard of of stomas before but didn’t know much about them and how much I would need to depend on them going forward.

My “new normal” would take some time getting used to but eventually I would realise that having this stoma would save my life. As a result of this, I am now able to thrive in everyday life with my precious son and amazing fiancé, go on holidays and just enjoy the smaller things.

There isn’t much awareness around Crohns and Colitis and it can be a difficult thing to talk about but something that is so so important. In light of this, I will be doing a 13 mile winter walk in January 2025 to raise money for Crohns and Colitis UK to try and rid this disease and help find a cure.
