Story
Volunteer Zambia: Changing Lives Through Sport
Volunteer Zambia is an international Sport for Development initiative that harnesses the power of sport to engage, inspire, and educate disadvantaged young people in Zambia. The programme focuses on promoting gender equality and raising awareness around HIV/AIDS, while also strengthening the overall sporting infrastructure in the country
Led by the Wallace Group, a collaboration of seven UK universities, students and staff travel to Zambia each summer to support Sport in Action, a local NGO. Together, they deliver life-changing development programmes to hundreds of young people. Through coaching, mentoring, and community engagement, volunteers help build sustainable sporting opportunities that improve health, foster peer connections, and provide vital education.
Zambia faces significant challenges, with high rates of HIV/AIDS contributing to over 1.2 million orphaned children in a population of just 17 million. Yet, thanks to ongoing global support and initiatives like Volunteer Zambia, progress is being made.
This project offers safe, inclusive spaces for young people to thrive through sport. The 2025/26 Northumbria University volunteer team is passionate, committed, and working tirelessly to raise the funds needed to make this journey possible; and to make a lasting impact.
This is our collective fundraising page. We’re running a series of events to help cover the costs of the project, and every single donation brings us one step closer to changing lives.
Thank you for your support. Every contribution counts.
