Story
As a group of 7, we have chosen to each walk 72 miles cumulatively over September to replicate one of the journeys, albeit in a more forgiving environment, that a refugee must undertake to escape the difficulties they experience like the Syrian war through no fault of their own. In this case, the 72 miles is equivalent to the distance between Damascus and Beirut which is a common route for refugees. Lebanon now believes statistically that at least 1 in 4 people there are refugees. With it being a small state, half the size of wales, with a population of approximately 4 million, there are 1.1 million registered refugees. This obviously doesn't even account for those that remain unregistered.
We're doing this alongside the Miles for Refugees Campaign but have chosen to do it for The Refugee Council instead so for more info on the challenge itself then check here https://miles.redcross.org.uk/ .
The Refugee Council is a charity that provides support for these refugees in a number of ways such as help and advice with the asylum process, integration and employment once it has been granted as well as easily accessible mental health support. We'd definitely recommend signing up to their email list if you're interested in receiving updates around the refugee crisis and the UK! https://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/
We've actually already started this challenge, however any donations will still be greatly appreciated by us, the charity and the people that they help.
