Story
For Emma, taking part in the 2026 Norfolk Superhero Challenge is about far more than completing an event — it’s deeply personal.
Nineteen years ago, after the birth of her first son, Emma was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Almost overnight, she went from being strong, fit, active and always on the go, to barely being able to walk, use her hands, or manage simple daily tasks. Every part of her body ached, and physically and emotionally it was one of the hardest periods of her life — especially while caring for a newborn baby.
At her weakest, Emma was so unable to use her hands that she had to carry her son by holding onto his baby grow with her mouth. It’s a moment she will never forget.
Through determination, treatment, resilience and incredible support from those around her, Emma slowly rebuilt her strength and her health. Because of that journey, she never takes movement, fitness or good health for granted.
That is one of the reasons this challenge means so much to her.
Emma understands first-hand the physical and emotional impact that being unable to move, exercise or take part in everyday activities can have. She knows how important sport, activity and confidence can be for both physical and mental wellbeing, especially for young people.
That’s why raising money for the Norfolk Superhero Fund is so important.
Across Norfolk, too many children are missing out on the chance to enjoy active, healthy lives:
• 1 in 5 children leave primary school obese
• 8% have a diagnosed mental health need
• 1 in 3 can’t swim
Every mile we swim, paddle, cycle and run together helps open doors for children who might otherwise be left behind — providing opportunities, coaching, kit, activities and accessible equipment to help local children get active and thrive in their communities.
Emma wanted to take on this challenge to push herself that little bit further and prove to herself that she still can do it.
Emma will be assisted in her challenge by Sarah, who has completed the Superhero Challenge before but relishes the opportunity every single time. Sarah is looking forward to supporting Emma throughout the event, helping her achieve this incredible personal goal, and together raising as much money as possible for such a worthwhile cause.
Thank you so much for supporting us — every donation will help more children in Norfolk become active, confident and connected.
