Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Once a year Liz holds a special garden party at her house to celebrate not only another amazing year of her own remission from Breast Cancer but is also joined with other family and friends celebrating another amazing year of their own remission from cancer. It is a very special, emotional moment when each of the cancer survivors step up to ring the big bell once for every year of their individual remission and then everyone parties to the early hours afterwards!

This year Liz is celebrating 11 years of remission on her birthday and will ring the bell 11 times. Later in October, Liz, Alister, Stuart & Jane are taking on the challenge of a lifetime; trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! This is a gruelling 26-mile, four-day Peru trek over treacherous rocky terrain, including three summits and altitudes of up to 4,200m above sea level, which once conquered, leads to one of the seven wonders of the world.

Once we’re over the 26 hour travel, we will have really long trek days sometimes at night whilst carrying heavy kit, amidst the altitude, the heat, the inclines, on rickety vertical stone steps, narrow paths of rock and sheer drops, staying in dodgy tents – and if the lack of sleep, sores, blisters, bruises and muscle aches aren’t enough, there will be spiders everywhere!

We are taking on this incredible challenge to raise money for Finding Your Feet, Scotland’s leading amputee charity. FYF support families affected by amputation or limb absence through a range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects designed to positively affect both physical and mental wellbeing. Our businesses, Bathroom Elegance & Wet Wall Works are kindly sponsoring the event to ensure every penny raised goes to Finding Your Feet!

The key causes of amputation are cancer, diabetes, sepsis, meningitis, vascular disease, accidents, and addiction, and research has showed that without support, 30% of vascular amputees do not survive one year post-amputation. FYF aims to be on hand with some form of support or opportunity for every amputee in Scotland. The first step towards doing this is to connect people and make them smile, providing many clubs for socialisation and friendship. They then provide vital physical fitness and emotional well-being activities - whether it’s swimming lessons for kids, a social cup of tea and a chat or phone call when an amputee or their family are feeling a little low, more intensive emotional well-being services such as counselling, peaceful gardening for grandparents, encouragement to climb a mountain or just to climb out of bed in the morning, they are here when people need them most.
