Story
This September, we are pedalling to end period poverty and tackle the barriers that young girls in East Africa face on a daily basis to attend school.
Patience’s school didn’t have a girls bathroom that the girls could use especially when menstruating. Patience and her friends would often go and hide in the bush which put them at risk. Patience would also miss lessons when she was forced to go home during the day to wash herself as she didn’t have sanitary products.
“School wasn’t safe for young girls like me and it was very difficult to manage my period. There was no private space I could use to go to the toilet and clean myself. I often had to miss school due to the shame. Thanks to I AM GIRL, I haven’t had to miss school due to my period. I am performing very well in my studies and most of all I am not ashamed.”
Fields of Life are tackling these issues that young face on a daily basis through their I AM GIRL programme. This project is more important now that ever before.
We want to help girls like Patience and empower them to complete their education, grow into healthy young women and be change makers within their own communities.
