Raising money for St Helena Hospice

St Helena's core services are free and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Two thirds of our funding comes from the amazing support we receive from people like you. Fundraising in memory of a loved one? You might like to create a Timeless Tribute Fund: timelesstributefunds.org.uk

Story

The Challenge:

Climb all 3 of the highest mountains in England, Scotland & Wales in 24 hours.

The Reason:

We have chosen to take on this mammoth challenge and raise funds for St Helena in memory of George Whittaker - who tragically lost his battle with cancer in February at such a young age. George wished for any funds raised after he passed away to be donated to St Helena Hospice. Many of the guys in the team taking on the challenge knew George as far back from their time at Tendring Technology College.

St Helena Hospice offer an invaluable care service for people with incurable illness. St Helena is heavily reliant on funding from donations from our local community, with only 1/3 being funded by the NHS.

Unfortunately all of us will experience the need for this service with ourselves or loved ones at some point in our lives so any donations you can make will be truly appreciated.

The Team:

A group of 7 supreme male specimens in peak physical condition ready to destroy all previous national 3 peak 24 hour records that lay before us.

The team heralds from a small village in North Essex, Thorpe-Le-Soken - which despite its complete lack of undulating terrain, has a renowned reputation amongst the global mountaineering community for producing extremely skilled alpinists.

The Itinerary:

To kick off the challenge we will be tackling Scotland's highest mountain - Ben Nevis.

Typically, most mortals attempting this 24 hour challenge would take the easy tourist path to the summit for a gentle warm up for the tough day ahead. That was simply not an option for the talent and endurance that this group possesses.

We, instead will be ascending up the most fearsome & physically demanding path up to Ben Nevis Summit - the CMD Arete. A gruelling 15km hike that contains a knee trembling grade 1 scramble to to the peak.

Next up - straight down to the lake district to tackle Englands largest peak - Scafell Pike. This ascent will take place in the middle of the night in complete darkness, adding an extra layer of danger to what is already an expedition that is not for the faint hearted. Fear not - the team is fully trained and qualified in how to use head torches, both in how to attach to the head and switch to the ON position.

Finally and possibly the most difficult section of the challenge - down to Wales in the early hours of the morning to take on Snowdons most feared route to the summit - Grib Goch.

The very name strikes fear into the hearts of even the most experienced climbers. It is an adrenaline fuelled, gut wrenching traverse across a knife edge ridge with huge sheer drops of up to 1000ft.
