Story
2 years ago, we trekked Snowdon. This year we are going higher… to the summit of Ben Nevis at 1,345 metres above sea level. We desperately want to support Loving Humanity and raise the funds to provide 1000 woman and girls in Gaza with washable sanitary pad kits. Please read on to learn about the fantastic work of this small but mighty charity.
THE WORK OF LOVING HUMANITY:
We are passionate about educating and empowering women and girls living in conflict zones and in poverty; those who have nothing and those who have lost everything.
Our washable sanitary pad kits are hand-made by local women in our micro-factories. To date we have supplied over 8,000 girls with pad kits.
The micro-factories impact the whole community. They create jobs for local women and they provide girls with high quality pads to be able to stay in school once they start menstruating and it is in school where belief systems and practices, such as female genital mutilation, can be addressed. Additionally, the micro-factories become safe spaces where conversations about sexual and reproductive health can happen.
Educationally, the impact of our pads is significant with schoolgirls reporting that they are now able to attend school instead of missing several days a month, this has resulted in their test scores increasing by up to two-thirds, some girls have retaken a year’s education to catch up again and they feel confident to attend school knowing they will not leak.
On a physical level, most cheap sanitary pads are made predominantly of plastic with the top layer of the pad causing rashes and infections. The washable pads have been a huge success with the girls telling us how they no longer suffer with discomfort and are happy and confident to go to school.
Financially, the washable sanitary pad kits (containing 3 shields and 9 inserts) last the girls and women 5 years or longer. The money saved enables families to be able to pay their bills, especially in families where there are up to 8 daughters!
We are raising money for our project in Amman, Jordan where we currently employ 4 Iraqi refugee women who escaped from ISIS in Mosul. We have supplied the Mother Teresa homes in Amman, worked with local churches to reach the refugee population in the city, exported to Sierra Leone, South Africa, a refugee camp on the Greek / Macedonian border and we continue to export 1000s of pad kits to schoolgirls in Burundi. We currently work with local NGOs in Jordan distributing to the Palestinian camp of Ba’qua and the Iraqi refugee population who receive no aid from the government. Additionally we are making 1000 pad kits for the women and girls in Gaza to be distributed by the International Red Cross.
£30,000 helps 4,000 girls a month for 5 years or longer. That’s £7.50 per girl for 5 years.
Each year we hope to support another 4,000 girls. But we need to raise £30,000 each year to cover the cost of wages, materials and overheads.
Please help us!
Thank you.
