We help premature and sick babies in the UK to give every baby the best possible future

Story

We're twins and we're going to complete a twin challenge to benefit two different charities: QEF (Queen Elizabeth Foundation) and Bliss (charity for premature babies. On September 19th Karen and I will be walking the equivalent distance of all three of the UK's tallest peaks combined:

Ben Nevis: 11.5 miles; Snowdon: 9.5 miles; Scafell Pike: 8 miles. Karen and I will be walking 29 miles in one day.

My daughter Alice was born at 27 + 6 days. She weighed a bit heavier than a bag of sugar and it's charities like Bliss that made sure she was well taken care of in the NICU of two different hospitals for the first 3 months of her life. She's a very healthy, funny and ridiculous 5 and a half year old now. Karen has raised money for Bliss before and that's who she's chosen to support for this challenge.

I've completed previous challenges for QEF - a charity based in Surrey which cares for children and adults alike who have either been born with or acquired a neurological condition. There are members of the armed forces who have received brain injuries being cared for and rehabilitated by new state of the art facilities in Leatherhead. I'm trying to raise money for a Bugzi which is a fun, motorised chair which helps kids aged 2 and upwards to not only get moving with a bit more independence but also to put a smile on their (and their mums and dads) faces.

QEF and Bliss have both suffered during this pandemic with much of their fundraising either being cancelled or put on hold. Like the rest of us they rely on fundraising to not only save lives but to keep people in jobs that help to save those lives and we're hoping we can do our part to help.

Reach the Peak for Karen will be no small task as she suffers from chronic inflammation in her joints. Just 3 miles in she will start to feel it but she is determined not to let it stop her from achieving her goal which is simply not to let her condition define her or let it dictate how much of life she can enjoy.

So, I've decided that if she is going to set the bar high for herself then I should too. So, in addition to this 29 mile trek with Karen I will also be embarking on a 21 day Virtual Tough Mudder challenge: I will have to climb the equivalent of Mount Vesuvius (1281m) either walking or running; walk or run 73 miles (the same length as Hadrian's Wall) as well as completing weekly challenges like Kiss of Mud where I will army crawl for 40 foot through mud. In addition to being asked to do 300 reps of various circuits. It hurts just thinking about it.

I will post pictures of our training for the 29 mile trek, the 29 mile trek itself as well as progress of the Tough Mudder challenges. Please give what you can in these strange times. Both our charities are listed below so feel free to choose which one you would like to donate (or donate to both)! Select 'Donate to Team Member'. Anything you can give is welcomed. And please share on Facebook and any other social media you can get access to if you can!

Thank you - Karen & Steve.

Bliss is the leading UK charity for babies born premature or sick. We rely on donations to fund our work but with one baby admitted to neonatal care every five minutes we don’t have the resources to reach every baby who needs us. Your donation can help Bliss ensure every baby gets the best care.
