Three recently retired friends are aiming to play all 29 golf courses in Cornwall during 2022 in order to raise funds for the Primrose team at Derriford hospital in Plymouth.

Two of our wives have recently been treated for breast cancer and have been cared for by the wonderful Primrose team at Derriford. We wanted to find a way to give something back to say thank you for everything they've done for us.

Being keen golfers (some better than others), we have decided to challenge ourselves to play all of the courses affiliated with the Cornwall Golf Union in 2022. There are a total of 29 courses to play, including one on the Isles of Scilly.

We will be updating this page with our progress as we complete each round.

Course #29 – China Fleet

Date: 19th September 2022

Winner: Ian (32 points)

After playing the previous 28 courses throughout the whole of Cornwall, it all came down to the final round at our home course, China Fleet. We were blessed with some fine autumnal weather for the decider.

The first few holes proved to be quite a scrappy affair with nobody exactly covering themselves in glory, which was probably down to everyone suffering a little from their nerves on such a big occasion! After that, things settled down a little with Ian taking a slender lead of just a single point over the other two after the first 9 holes.

Ian started the back 9 quite well and at one point held a 4 point lead over Kev with Stephen just a point or two further back. As the holes diminished, Stephen’s challenge faltered, leaving the match to be a straight fight between Ian and Kev. Kev started applying the pressure, whitling the lead down to just a single point as we prepared to tee off on the final hole.

Ian took a somewhat wayward route towards the green, whilst Kev smashed it straight down the fairway, but a couple of poor approach shots from Kev followed by a missed putt left the door open for Ian to scramble his final 3 foot putt to tie the hole on points and so hang on to claim the victory … and the overall challenge by just half a point.

Thank you to Ben and the rest of the team at China Fleet Golf Club for discounting our fees, allowing us to bolster the charity funds by a further £82. That takes the total figure raised to more than £3,500 for the Primrose foundation which far exceeds any of our expectations at the start of the year. A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us in what has been a truly memorable experience.
