Story
Welcome to the Team Claygate JustGiving page.
Some of you may recall that last year we sweated ourselves round the 5k in Epsom in aid of Cancer Research. For many of us this was our first race & indeed the first time wed ever run anywhere!
Somehow weve managed to goad each other into entering the British Open 10k Race on July 11th this year (http://www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk/). No knee high grass or steep gradients this year, just the good bits of the marathon we’re told, but there is the small matter of it being twice as far!
Our chosen charity is Myeloma (http://www.myeloma.org.uk/). My Mum Margaret died in November 2008, having finally lost her 10 year battle with myeloma - a type of bone marrow cancer, currently incurable. When she was diagnosed she was given 5 years at most, but apart from Mum’s sheer grit & determination not to give in, it was the developments in treatments during those years that enabled her to steal 5 more precious years. She danced til she dropped at both my & my brother’s weddings, got to be a fabulous Grandma to Jake & Megan, climbed Machu Pichu and visited other far flung destinations with Dad that she’d always dreamed of seeing.
There was a lot of pain and suffering in between these highlights, but the work that Myeloma UK does – research, trials, patient support to name but a few – directly benefitted Mum and allowed her to live as full and long a life as she could possibly manage. A good friend of mine recently told me that her friend had just been diagnosed with myeloma. Not yet 40 and with young children it is a tragic story, but hopefully with the benefits of the trials Mum took part in and similar research supported by Myeloma UK, she will live to see her children grow up.
Our suffering will be limited to aching limbs & sore feet (and the fact that we have to run in day-glo orange running vests!), but we hope that you’ll help boost our motivation to get round by sponsoring us so that we can be sure that every step, however slow, really will count.
Thank you for supporting us and Myeloma . And dont forget to Gift Aid your donation if you can!
