Most people will have heard of the phrase 'The Big C' and know of its devastating meaning. After all, it is our linguistic way of making a word that is almost unutterable become a little less malignant, even benign.
I want to change that, even if only briefly.
'C' can have another meaning, it is the Roman numeral for '100'. I would like to recruit 100 people to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Having recently had treatment for breast cancer, I am overwhelmingly grateful to the team at the Western General, Edinburgh and for the work they do. The Breakthrough research unit at the Western is working to ensure that the treatments for breast cancer are better, and that outcomes for patients are improved.
I am exceptionally lucky, my prognosis is excellent, but having been touched by this illness, I can understand the devastating impact of the diagnosis and the treatment, both for me, and the people close to me. 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer and there are still 1000 of us dying each year in Scotland as a result.
If my '100' help to fund Breakthrough's research team, and even in a small way help improve those statistics, I will be so pleased.
How each person raises money is up to them, but please be creative and most of all, have fun.
Sue xx
