Story

Well folks, you will be glad to hear the last of us for a while...not that we are even contemplating doing that again...but there are always other challenges out there!!

So we did it - 100k in 28 hours 1 minute and who's really counting!? It's over, it's accomplished, let's never do it again!!!

The whole event began with Hazel, Doug, Jean, Tim, and myself all pitching in to shave young Fraser's heed! Thanks everyone who dug deep towards the end to make that happen! Awesome!! I think he still has the remnants, which is a little creepy!

We started the walk in stellar style, marching along faster than ever and getting through the stages like there were no tomorrow...although tomorrow came, and with it it brought pain!!

Jean managed to take an impressive stumble on stage 2...she's now been to the physio and found out she completed the walk with torn ligaments around her knee...she's been telling us she's a tough cookie but only now has it been proven...she is  Hard. As. Nails!!

Fraser's "a man walks into a bar..." kept spirits high, as did  'word games and band names', and everyone's stories, jokes and songs along the way. Everyone had their low points but there were always 6 other cheery faces to pick us right back up again. The team work was paramount! and the love was flowing thick and fast! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!

Nightfall came and brought a slight sombre mood with it but we powered on and kept focused. The dreaded Stage 9 (or simply "Hell") almost tore us apart...it was one of the longest stages and so close to the end it really drained on our motivation. I think everyone had extreme mental barriers to fight through. Getting to the checkpoint, we refuelled and picked ourselves up. The end was in sight and nothing was stopping us now. The last 2 stages were short ones and the 1st of which flew by. The 2nd, however, dragged!! We could see the racecourse...but it seemed a fair distance! Emotions were flaring again and the reality of finishing was overwhelming!

We entered the racecourse with high spirits and took each others hands for the finishing stretch. Here we were crossing the finishline with lumps in our throats and pride grinning across our faces with our amazing support crew waiting eagerly to congratulate us! John, Jan and Jeff were the best support crew and really inspired us and lifted our spirits at every checkpoint :)

Much deserved champagne was passed around at the finishline and we all inevitably passed out in the sun!!

Muscles, aches and pains are easing off now as are the hellish memories and the highs, happy memories, and overwhelming sense of achievement are shining through!!

Thanks so much to everyone for your support, donations, well wishes and encouragement. I think it's safe to say if we didn't have you all rooting for us we would have struggled to get through to the end! (Well who could blame us; there would be nothing to prove!!)

I sincerely love you all,

Suzi Haggai and the rest of the gang

xx

Welcome to our fundraising page!

THE LIMPING HAGGAI ARE:
Myra Laing (master of the team and of the compass)
Suzi McGuire (master of the lunges)
Jean Marra (master of the vocals, currently 'training' on the beaches of east Australia)
Brenda Laing (master of the baking, our most amazing member of our support crew 2008, stepping up to the challenge in 2009)

You are not mistaken...we ARE putting ourselves through the emotional and physical torment AGAIN and embarking on the 100km (roughly 62mile) stroll through the South Down's Way for Oxfam's Trailwalker 2009! This year we have pledged to raise £1500 for Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust, two extremely worthwile charities. Please donate whatever you can, or come to some of our fundraising events throughout the year.

Every penny we raise is going straight to the charities - none will be used for travel expenses, walking boots, fancy b&bs and all the other things we will need, it all goes straight to helping those less fortunate than us!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Oxfam gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Check out Oxfam.com to see how even as little as £2 can help stop the spread of disease through providing 6 mosquito nets! Also, you can find out more about trailwalker there too - its a great event and the information on the website is really inspiring!
