On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 Haiti was struck by an earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale. By January 24, approximately 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 and higher were recorded. As of February 12, an estimated 3 million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian government reports that between 217,000 and 230,000 people were identified as dead, an estimated 300,000 injured, and an estimated 1,000,000 homeless.
All of these figures are higher than the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 that affected a much higher land mass. The death toll is expected to rise over the coming weeks.
UNICEF has been working in Haiti since 1949. They rely entirely on voluntary contributions and receive no funding from the United Nations budget. Your donation will go to the Haiti Earthquake Children’s Appeal to support children affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti.
So please dig deep and help those that need it most. Your generosity is most welcome and for every penny we donate, Katherine has promised to double it.
Many thanks everyone.
