A group of around 20 men will be walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks on May 23rd 2009 to raise money for Tommy’s,a charity that’s slogan is “a charity giving babies the best chance of being healthy” and which relies almost entirely on charitable donations in order to survive.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is 26 miles climbing 3 different Peaks in around 12 hours. This challenge is a walking route with the circuit normally starting and ending at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, visiting the three highest peaks in Yorkshire - Pen-y-ghent(691m), Whernside(728m),and Ingleborough(723m) - in that order. The total distance walked is around 26 miles. This is a long and demanding walk, with a total climb of some 5,200 feet. We will be setting off at around 6 o’clock in the morning from our hostel in Horton in Ribbsdale and won’t return until around 6 o’clock to collapse with a nice cold well deserved beer. Why I hear you ask… well I’ll tell you.

A couple of us have been affected by child loss in the form of miscarriages in the last couple of years, and we were sat together and decided to do something that could make a difference for other people wanting to have a family. Miscarriages happen so regularly and everyone I spoke to after considering the event either knew someone that it had happened to or it had happened to themselves and its not always something we talk about to each other, especially not a group of mid 20 year old gents. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage and it can bring so much heartache and pain to people as one member of the group describes after their own personal tradgedy:

"I never knew how much it would affect myself, which I guess you don’t until it happens to you. For my partner and myself it shook our world and left us thinking what we had done wrong, who’s fault it was and we were left looking for someone to blame. The truth is no one is usually to blame and its nature’s way of saying that you aren’t ready. It has taken me nearly 10 months to realise this but I don’t think I will ever get over it totally."

As you can see, this suffering and heartache is truly something we all would never wish anyone to go through but unfortunately far too many of us have or will. So ask you to kindly donate as much as you can afford so we can help Tommys to exist in order to save babies lives by funding research and providing information on the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth
