About Aldenham School, Eros Run, 9th July 2010

The famous Piccadilly Square Eros Statue was scultped by Alfred Gilbert, who was once a pupil at Aldenham School which my son Harry attends.

A replica statue stands in the grounds of the school and so every year the Eros run goes from one statue to the other, a distance of some 14 miles mostly up hill taking several hours

This year, the Eros Run participants are raising money for Ripple Africa, a charity founded by Geoff Furber (Old Aldenhamian). The school has developed extensive links with the charity, which operates in Malawi and hopes to provide “a hand up, not a hand out.”  A group of pupils and staff will be working out in Malawi this summer, following a highly successful inaugural trip last July.

About Harry and Trev

Harry decided to volunteer for this run a few weeks back. He did so as a challenge to himself and so completely forgot, as we did, to collect money for charity. This is a massive challenge for Harry, he has been traing and in fact won his school sports day 800m and 1500m races on Monday of this week aged 14 years.

So I decided a few days ago to accompany Harry on this run, but on a bike. You might think this is bonkers as I have't riden any further than to the post box in the last 20 years. I haven't trained at all. So like Son LIke Father this time around, both bonkers.

Anyhow, I am writing this page at 10pm, the NIGHT BEFORE the run. In fact we're getting up in just 6 hours at 4am tomorrow so I better hurry up and finish the bloody thing.

Please give whatever you can, however small, it will inspire us both to complete the mission and it's for a fabulous cause.

Thanks again kind friends and please pray for me to get past Oxford Circus.

About Ripple Africa

RIPPLE Africa is very different to most charities working in Africa. Normally, so much money is wasted on administration, monitoring, report writing, inefficient systems, etc., that very little money actually finds its way to the people who the donors wish to help. RIPPLE Africa is based at Mwaya Beach and has minimal local overheads. The charity deals directly with the local communities, and it is made clear that RIPPLE Africa helps people who help themselves. The charity often acts as a catalyst to make things happen.

RIPPLE Africa is involved with education and healthcare locally to Mwaya. It is also actively involved in an environmental tree planting and reforestation project in Nkhata Bay District, which covers an area of 4,000 sq.km.

Geoff and Liz Furber started RIPPLE Africa in 2003. They have a passion for Africa, and in particular the area and the people around Mwaya, Malawi, where the charity is based. Geoff brings a wealth of commercial experience to RIPPLE Africa, having run his own business for over 25 years, and Liz has a sound administrative background. The combination of their skills has meant that the charity has developed into an effective, fun and well run organisation. They are realists, not idealists, and believe in giving a hand up, not a hand out.
