Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

My name is Tony Herbert. I am proud to be launching my friend John O'Neill's appeal for sponsorship on June 10th 2018, exactly eight years after the death of my son in  police custody in 2010. John is taking part in the London Triathlon (Olympic distance: 1500m swim, 40k cycle, 10k run) on August 5th 2018.

John ran a 10k in memory of James, just after his inquest in 2013 and raised over £3000 for INQUEST. This time his purpose is to honour all those who have lost their lives in State Detention, after police contact or through failures of State Agencies. That is thousands of stolen lives and futures. John's participation in the London Triathlon is in memory of them all.

John is 63 years old.  Last year at the London Triathlon,  there were only 18 competitors out of a field of 2,368 in John's age-group (60-64). It is a formidable challenge.

I have met many other similarly bereaved families, who like mine have campaigned for justice for their loved ones  and for change to prevent future deaths. INQUEST's support has been beyond price for us.  INQUEST supports families bereaved following a state-related contentious death, whether it has happened in custody and detention, through multi-agency failings or where wider issues of state and corporate accountability are in question, as with the Hillsborough and Grenfell Tower disasters.

John has seen just how important INQUEST's work is, how they fight deep injustice and are an effective and compassionate voice for those who lost theirs together with their lives and futures. John has been sufficiently moved to train for two years for the London Triathlon  to raise funds for INQUEST, which they will use to bolster their case work.  Please support this incredibly important cause.
