In
all the years that filmmaker Jonathan Rossetti lived in the Tulsa area,
he never found himself at the Blue Whale, the quirky and popular Route
66 roadside attraction.
For him, like a lot of people, the
younger Rossetti knew the Blue Whale was “out there, somewhere,” but he
never quite made it “there,” he said.
But after seeing vintage
photographs of the Blue Whale from the 1980s, at a time when kids were
still allowed to go for a dip in the swimming hole, the filmmaker, who
is now based in Los Angeles, is coming home to make a movie there.
“Location
is like the seed for me in making a movie, and these pictures of kids
swimming and jumping off the tail of the whale, it just begged for a
story,” Rossetti said. “It seemed so fun that it made me wish that I had
been a part of that.”
Part of that may be nostalgia, but for him, there’s also a pure affection for our landmarks.
“There’s
something that I love that is happening in Oklahoma, and that’s this
appreciation and love for the things around you, whether it’s images of
the Cain’s Ballroom or the Golden Driller, just the iconography of
Oklahoma. The Blue Whale is part of that.”
“The Blue Whale” is
set to begin filming in May, and it’s largely the result of Rossetti’s
success with his first film, “Home, James” — a Tulsa-shot romantic film
made for $60,000 that won an important DeadCenter Film Festival award
and positive reviews from the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter, in
addition to the Tulsa World.
