Story

UPDATE: 26 April 2009
Well I made it to the end and I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that it's one-up for girl-power as I tried, but failed, to beat Julia's time which turned out to be just too fast for me!

I was pleased to finish in 4:26:53, a notable 43 minutes better than my previous best marathon. I crossed the finish line vowing never to run it again, but by the time I got home to write this - I'd changed my mind and will try to get a place for next year (or the year after).

Singularly the most motivational thing that helped me get around was knowing that so many of my friends, colleagues and family had helped so generously to support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. I hope once I've added up all the cash, cheques and the pledges on-line that we should, together, have raised about £3,500. So a big thanks to all those who've supported this hugely worth-while cause.

        Thanks!  David

UPDATE: 24 April 2009
I've registered and collected number, I'll be 50560 starting from the Red Start. <<< A picture here with Cystic Fibrosis running vest and very old (but favourite) cap!

I'm mainly resting and eating lots which is quite a change from a month ago.

Final fundraising push now in full swing... please help out The CF Trust!

UPDATE: 22 April 2009
Training has gone quite well, surprisingly and I actually find myself eagerly awaiting the race on Sunday. I don't think, in the timescale, that I could have done any more than I have, at least from a training perspective.

A big thanks to all those who have donated so kindly so far. Some special notes:
 * Everybody at Magus - and to the boss for matching all the sponsorship from the crew (staff).
 * The village where I live, Drayton St Leonard, for a huge bout of fund raising generocity.
 * Friends and family - especially Mum who phoned... just about everybody.
 * The kids' schoolfriends' parents at Abingdon Prep

Watch out for me... No 50560 - bright yellow CFTrust vest with D.A.V.I.D. on the front (picture to follow - if you think you can take it).

ORIGINAL NOTE: 25 January 2009
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

"Oh no - not another
sponsorship message from Wibles". I bet that's the first thing that crossed you mind when you got the email from me. C'mon own up... you really did. Well I don't blame you. I think the same when I get asked for sponsorship aswell.

Serious bit:
You've probably already guessed but I'm running another Flora London Marathon to try and raise money for the
CF Trust. Only this time it is likely to be a much harder! The economic climate is frightening to say the least and I can well imagine that some of you will be thinking it's quite hard to part with your cash at such a difficult time. Well, I think it's a lot easier to part with your cash than part with your life. Which is an outcome looming large over many sufferers of this debilitating condition.

So maybe you and I and those who can run marathons, work a full day, study all day long, party into the night, shop-til-you-drop, holiday until you can holiday no more... can spare some of that dough to help a whole load of others who need it much, much more.

So just to make it especially hard for myself... I've doubled what I raised for charity last time, I hope to raise £5,000 this time.

You probably already know but by god-daughter, Meaghan, has CF. Despite the condition, Meaghan and Mum and Dad seem so upbeat all the time and it's for them I want to show that compared to the effort they put in day-after-day, week-after-week, running a marathon is pretty easy - I can always stop and walk and just take a breather when it gets too much, chat to some strangers on the course and get back into the hard bit when I feel like it. It would be nice if all of us had that luxury.

Not so serious bit:
I'm only really doing it because Julia did 3h59'38 last year and a year of non-stop goading has driven me to take out the most extreme personal vendetta... I've got to beat her! So I'm embarking on a back-breaking 14 week training programme to get my over-weight body (obese actually according to bleedin' Wii Fit!) into shape. The first ten days went ok, but that's only the warm up. More recently, the distances have been stepping up to 20 miles last weekend - and the 50p-sized blisters to show for it.

I'll post up my training programme and fill in the occasional blog to let you all know how it's going. In my characteristic "all or nothing" mentality, nine sessions a week lay ahead of me, mostly running, but some swimming and erging aswell (yes, I've still got a rowing machine when I particularly feel like torturing myself).

Well more soon, but in the mean time: give us yer money as Bob Geldof would say! Here's how...

So here's the 'how to donate' guide:
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cystic Fibrosis Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Just click the Purple button at the top or the Purple button at the bottom! The one that says "SPONSOR US NOW".

So please sponsor me now and lets see off CF!
