Story

{Raising Money for Childrens Dialysis Unit Fund number 5M42.}

Hi , welcome to Zayna 's story. Zayna  was born November 2005 , she is the youngest of 3 children. Although everything looked perfect during the early months of her life , we had noticed that she wasn't progressing  as her peers (not sitting or crawling around 6-8 months old). After many tests, a  diagnosis was never found.  We were told it was global developmental delay.  The reality was the fact that our little Zayna would have disability and special needs. In the next few years , Zayna settled into special school. we moved house in Dec. 2009 , in hope to make adapted disabled living area, to make life a little easier. Little did we know what was around the corner.

In January 2010 Zayna (aged 4yrs old) was diagnosed with kidney disease. For two years, numerous drugs were given to Zayna in hope of controlling the disease, but sadly in October 2012 she went into complete Renal failure . For Zayna this meant an emergency surgery to implant a central line and within hours she was placed on haemodialysis. This was a very difficult time for us all, the dialysis nurses and Renal consultants gave us tremendous support and were amazing with Zayna, this helped us deal with the daunting experience.  Dialysis meant going to Leeds 3-4 times every week and being attached to a dialysis machine for 3-5 hours. The machine was doing the work of what the kidneys could no longer do . These were long and arduous sessions, which did make Zayna sick from time to time. In June 2013, the Consultants moved Zayna to Peritoneal Dialysis , which involved surgery again, a catheter was  placed in her Peritoneal cavity. This dialysis took place at home , every night for 10 hours.  Looking back,  this was a very difficult time for our family. The only way that Zayna could have a life without dialysis would be to have a kidney transplant and all our prayers were answered. A week after Zayna's 8th birthday , we received the call from Zayna s consultant, they had found a match via  a cadaveric donor .On the 14th November, 2013 Zayna was given a successful kidney transplant. She was given a new lease of life!

Although our prayers were answered we cannot forget the children we met during dialysis, who are still waiting for kidney donors and are still on dialysis. Life on dialysis for children and their families is extremely challenging and emotional, your world is turned upside down. It is difficult to relax or to go away for a break without the constant worry of blood tests ,hospital appointments, dialysis sessions to attend and above all the realisation that without dialysis our children wouldn't survive. Not all people have family networks or support in place.  Therefore, we would like to give some happiness to these amazing children and families, by raising money for the children who are still on dialysis /recent kidney transplant. The money raised will be used to send the children and their family for overnight break or a day trip. Please give generously and lets create some happy memories for these incredible children.
