Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Batten Disease is a group of rare, progressive neurodegenerative, genetic metabolic diseases that occur in children and adults worldwide. The BDFA's Vision is to bring light to Batten Disease by being the central point of excellence in the for supporting affected families and to facilitate research into the disease.

Early symptoms of the disorder usually appear around ages 4-10, with gradual onset of vision problems, or seizures. Early signs may be subtle personality and behavior changes, slow learning or regression, repetitive speech or echolalia, clumsiness, or stumbling. There may be slowing head growth in the infantile form, poor circulation in lower extremities (legs and feet), decreased body fat and muscle mass, curvature of the spine, hyperventilation and/or breath-holding spells, teeth grinding, and constipation.

Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight, speech and motor skills. Eventually, children with Batten disease become blind, bedridden, and demented. Batten Disease is a life limiting disease, life expectancy varies

To raise money for this charity we will be undertaking a Three Peaks Challenge on the 25th September 2010.  I know it’s been done before, not very original, but in addition to this, and between now and September 2011 we will also be walking the 20 highest peaks in Wales.  This means climbing over 70,000 ft of mountains.

Some of these will require overnight wild camping and remaining self sufficient for a number of days.

That should mean the any donation given by you is well and truly earned by the efforts of the team.

We have put a target of £2000 on here but are hoping to raise much more than this.

If everyone that reads this was to take just a few moments to donate just a few pounds or what ever they could then the sky would be the limit.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now, and help show your support for this worthy cause.
