Story

UPDATE (21 June): We have completed it!

With beautiful weather throughout the weekend, we drew experience from being used to hot Singapore weather and surprised everyone with a very good performance. Unofficial climbing time was 7 hours and 16 minutes, which gave us the award for the Fastest Team. A few more photos will be posted online once we download from our cameras.

The overall top price went to one of Cargill's teams (which had hours of training behind them from the mountains around Geneva....) based on their fastest climbing time (about 30+ minutes ahead of us) and excellent fund raising of around USD 50,000 for the Sailor's Society. A total of USD 600,000 was raised for this fine charity by the 40 teams participating.

Today we are trying to heal our wounds; extremely sore muscles, a few destroyed toe nails and lots of blisters (Gregg's blister under the foot, at the size of a golfball, was considered worst ever by the event doctor!).

Thanks to all that have supported us and contributed to the Sailor's Socitey. It is still not too late to contribute for those that had their doubts in our abilities.... The page will be open for another month or so, and you can also send funds directly to Sailor's Socitey (remember to indicate "Singapore Kris Flyers / Team 39841" as reference.

Dear Friends,

We have signed up to participate in the Three Peaks Challenge in the in order to benefit the Sailors’ Society and now request your kind support.

The Challenge

The Challenge we have embarked on is ‘The 2010 Three Peaks Challenge’ which takes place between 18-21 June 2010 and consists of climbing three of the highest peaks in Great Britain within 24 hours!

The Peaks are Ben Nevis in (1344m/4406ft), Helvellyn in (950m/3117ft) and Snowdon in (1085m/3560ft).

As many as 40 teams from the shipping industry will be participating.  We are the only based team to enter the Challenge.

The Team

Although hailing from , Gregg Johnston has been in since March 2002 so has not had much of a chance in recent years to go “Munro bagging” (ie climbing any of the 284 mountains of 3000 feet or above in the Highlands of Scotland). By completing the challenge Gregg hopes to shed a few pounds (too much time spent in the office…) and hopefully raise a few Pounds Sterling for the Sailors’ Society.

Geir Bakkelund has always been very found of the mountains and has spent spent many days (and nights) hiking in the Norwegian national parks. His proudest moment was when climbing the highest mountain in and just as he reached the peak he experienced some severe “stomach problems” (due to contaminated water). Since then he always remember to carry toilet paper…. Geir has been in for almost two years and will likely “stay around” for a while as his Australian wife is not too eager to move back to his home country of .

Tom came to for a 6 months stint in 2003, but lost his passport and never managed to return to his native . Today, nearly 7 years later, he is still cherishing his work and life in the little island state. From his childhood at the south coast of , he is more used to fishing in the fjords than climbing in the highlands. However, during his time in Asia he has managed to conquer (4,095m/13,435ft) and reached an altitude of 4,585m/15,043ft at Yulong Xue Shan (aka ) in , . However, the latter involved a long cable car ride….

Your Support

The Singapore Kris Flyers team are proud to be able to support the Sailors’ Society. We hope that the “blood, sweat and tears” that we will shed during this weekend in June can inspire you to dig deep into your pockets and sponsor us in support of the Sailors’ Society, so we can enrich the lives of those at the cornerstone of our industry.  All money donated goes directly to the Sailors’ Society – each team member will be responsible for his own travel expenses to the .
