Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I promised Jackie that I would run the Reading Half Marathon and raise much needed funds for the wonderful Duchess of Kent House Charity.  Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity. I am really staggered by the all the support that I am getting.

Thanks to the massive support I had on Sunday morning, I was able to complete an emotional half marathon in 2 hours 43 minutes and 59 seconds ( a sort of a PB !).  The highlight of the day had to be the sound from the drum band by the oracle under pass - wow.

Terry Robinson’s wife was cared for at Duchess of Kent House last year. He popped into the charity office just before Christmas to buy a teddy for his young children.  ‘Do you like running?’ asked Sue, who helps organise the 60 plus supporters who are running this year’s Reading Half .  Before he knew it, Terry was signed up and started training in earnest, losing two stone in the process! Terry said,

‘Training for the Reading gave me purpose and direction and was a positive way I could thank the hospice staff for all they did for Jackie and the family before she died.’

You won’t miss Terry on marathon day as he will be dressed as St George with the charity’s logo on his shield and sword.  Terry works for Southern Electric in and is hoping that his workmates there and across the country will help him raise lots of money for Duchess of Kent House Charity.

So beware! Buy a teddy at the Charity and you might lose lots of weight and end up fighting a dragon!

About the charity

Duchess of Kent House (hospice) has 16 in-patient beds, day therapy facilities (3 days a week), out-patients and a Family Support Service (bereavement), providing palliative (hospice) care for the population of west and central Berkshire. In the last 15 years over 12,000 patients have been treated and cared-for by a team of 50 (full-time equivalent) consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, admin & site staff, etc. This care continues after death for those relatives who wish it through the FSS. All care is provided free of charge, according to need. As with all parts of the National Health Service there is never enough money to pay for all aspects of what we technically call ‘specialist palliative care’. This is where the independent charity Duchess of Kent House Trust comes in. Since 2002, the Duchess of Kent House Trust (independent charity) has raised £1,500,000 for the unit to pay for the Family Support Service, 2 in-patient beds otherwise not available, the dietician, chaplaincy, psychologist, aromatherapist, and equipment. Please support this local charity caring for local patients and their families. Thank you very much.
