Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’ve decided to take my annual challenge for charity up a
level this year and so on Sunday 11th September 2016, I’ll be taking
part in running the 13.1miles that is Morrison’s Great North Run of behalf of, and honourably, for the RNLI Lifeboats charity.

My ultimate aim to is complete the course in 2 hours or less
but whatever the time, I’m confident I’ll run to the distance and in return
surpassing the fundraising target of £300 (the standard minimum for
RNLI).

I have a brief about the RNLI below - I have managed to
arrange with the RNLI that all proceeds will go directly (and locally!) into the Shannon Lifeboat Appeal – the new generation lifeboat that will arrive in Workington’s station in 2017.

I have a sponsorship form on my desk if you wish to donate
and your option to Gift Aid. I will also set up by the weekend a JustGiving page, should you wish to donate there; a 70070 code should you wish to text your donation; and finally you can pay your pledge via PayPal through my domestic e-mail address, which I’ll provide should you wish to donate via that route.

Why the Workington RNLI?

The RNLI lifeboats are completely funded by voluntary contributions. The Workington station operates two boats, an All-weather Tyne Lifeboat, the Sir John Fisher, and an Inshore Lifeboat, the John F Mortimer. Over the life of the Sir John Fisher the all-weather lifeboat has been credited with 73 lives saved and 324 people brought safely ashore, in addition it has recovered five bodies from the sea for proper interment, and assisted by transferring a seriously ill crew member from
a passing ship to shore for medical treatment. The Workington Lifeboat Station has also been called upon to assist with flood rescue in the local area on four occasions since 2005, most recently in December 2015 when a number of badly affected people were assisted in need of evacuation in Barepot and the Gote Road area of Cockermouth.

It is now necessary to replace the Sir John Fisher, which is now 25 years old, because it no longer meets modern standards and must be replaced by a £2.1M Shannon Class Lifeboat, to be named ‘Dorothy May White’ – due for arrival in 2017. The Shannon will be capable of 25 knots (over 60% faster than the Sir John Fisher), has a range of 250 nautical miles, and includes many enhancements to its effectiveness as a
rescue craft and huge improvements to crew safety and comfort. In April/May 2016, myself and everyone associated with the RNLI in Workington have launched an appeal through the local media to raise £250,000 towards the cost of this excellent new capability.

The Shannon would replace the Tyne Lifeboat currently housed in the Port of Workington, however the services provided by the crew within Workington cover a vast part of the Cumbrian Coast and the Irish Sea as far as The Solway Firth in the North to the Ravenglass area in the South – and has even provided assistance in the West towards the Isle of
Man.

Many thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and, more importantly, for your donations to this fantastic cause.

Wayne.
