Story

Grandmas on El Camino – a Pilgrimage for Anna 2013

I am the proud grandmother of Anna who for her first 11 months was a wonderfully happy and sweet- natured little girl who gave us all much joy, so the sudden seizures which were the first signs of her mitochondrial illness came as a devastating shock. For the few remaining weeks of her life she received so much love and care at Great Ormond Street that her legacy is the wish we all have to do anything we can to support the Mitochondrial Research team there in their work to find ways to diagnose, treat and even one day cure this cruel disease.

In memory of Anna and to help to raise funds for this research in April 2013, one year after Anna’s death, my friend and fellow grandmother of small girls Carole Kenwright and I shall set out on a pilgrimage. We shall be walking the last 200 km of the Camino de Santiago – the ancient pilgrimage route through Galicia in Spain to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela.  Our aim is to cover about 25 km each day and to stay in hostels traditionally used by pilgrims.

If you would like to make a donation in Anna's memory, please click on the Donate button.  We are of course paying all of our own expenses, so all donations made in this way will be going specifically to the Mitochondrial Research Group at Great Ormond Street Hospital to fund essential laboratory equipment .

Thank you.
