You did it!
The cull of hedgehogs on the island of Uist has at last been halted. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and its partners in Uist Hedgehog Rescue have battled against the decision to kill the hedgehogs since the cull began in 2003, and for the last four years have carried out an annual rescue of hedgehogs, releasing them on the Scottish mainland. The massive rescue effort was made possible because of your kind donations.
Even though the hedgehogs are not being killed we still need funds, as we are still removing them from the island and releasing them on the mainland, only difference is we are not up against a cull (for this year at least).
The Hebredian Islands of North and South Uist and Benbecula are the important breeding areas for wading birds. Their population has dropped - unfortunately; it is possible that a contributing factor is that hedgehogs eat their eggs. Initially, the Uist Wader Project decided to kill all the hedgehogs, which were introduced to the island by people in the seventies to control garden slugs.
We believe firmly that relocation of the hedgehogs to the mainland is a far preferable solution than unnecessary extermination. We have fought long and hard to prove that relocation is the best option and at last this has been acknowledged.
More and more people are willing to help us with relocation, so now we can do better than before (please have a look at www.justgiving.com/hedgehogs2004, www.justgiving.com/hedgehogs2005, www.justgiving.com/hedgehogs2006). Please keep it going!
