Foster Hope is a project hosted by Alternative Family Services throughout Foster Care Awareness Month in May, highlighting the unsung heroes of the global crisis - Foster Parents.

Story

Alternative Family Services has provided 24/7 foster care, adoption and mental health services to the most vulnerable youth across the Greater Bay and Metropolitan Sacramento Areas for over 40 years and as many of you know, I have spent the last 33 years supporting kids and families through AFS. Today, more than ever, keeping foster children and the families that support them safe is imperative.

For the AFS community, the current crisis has presented extraordinary challenges. Fears aside, not one of our hundreds of AFS families have flinched in response to these challenges. Instead, placing themselves at risk, AFS families have taken more than 90 children into their homes since March 1st and AFS staff have continued to provide 24/7 support.

Foster children face many challenges and the foster parents that open their homes to them take on great risks and responsibilities. Our current situation has only intensified the challenges, increased the risks, and added to the responsibilities. I have dedicated my life to building community and more specifically building programs that ensure that AFS foster families and children get the services they need.

Please consider making a donation to support the foster families who are literally risking their lives to help kids in our communities.

Examples of how your donation may help:

-$1,000 provides financial support to AFS Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Funds will help supply the youth with housing support, food and services to help them navigate unemployment.

-$500 will provide masks, gloves, and face shields necessary for staff, foster parents, and kids dealing with COVID-19.

-$250 will provide a Chromebook or laptop for a foster youth who are now learning from home.

-$100 will cover the cost of an infrared thermometer allowing staff to safely test kids and foster family members in their homes or during visits with family members in the community.

-$25 helps fill an emergency COVID-19 care kit for families who are courageously accepting kids into their homes during the pandemic.
