Story

Hi My name is Michelle Baharier

I am the founder of CoolTan Arts

CoolTan arts is a mental health Arts charity in South London.

I am severely dyslexic so I ask that you take the time to cope with my home page having spelling mistakes and learn how to get to know me for who I am.

Our Sponsored Walk is a celebration of ‘mad’ culture, explore the past, present and future of “Madness and Contemporary Psychiatric Innovation” with CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle, a guided cultural walk from Maudsley Hospital to Tate Modern.

5 bio-degradable disposable sculptures made by CoolTan participants will be placed along the route of our walk and highlight the work of innovators such as Michael Faraday, Charles Babbage, Sir Peter Mansfield, Octavia Hill, David Morris.

This walk is part of the Story of London, a London-wide festival organised by the Mayor, which celebrates the capital both as a place of heritage and culture and as a cutting-edge city of change and new ideas.

The walk finishes at Tate Modern where walkers will have the opportunity to relax, have refreshments, get to know each other and view or buy CoolTan Arts’ recently published poetry book ‘Anthropology’.

The walk is 5 miles and it is suitable for people with a disabilities and wheel chair users . CoolTan Arts Largactyl Shuffle has been voted one of London’s top ten walks by Time out, and attracts a wide audience to our anti-stigma campaign. This project is opening new doors for CoolTan arts and enabling us to offer a wider choice of activities.

CoolTan Arts continues to grow in popularity.  Our current home is an old linseed oil warehouse, with a porta-loo.   Yet....

Our local authority have buildings for sale that are sitting empty including one across the road from where we are based, called John Smith House...........it use to be the Labour Party head quarters...........................and it is an ideal place for CoolTan Arts.
Currently CoolTan Arts really needs a space so we can have four different art studios, a Sewing machine room, IT suite with video and sound editing, a music room a gallery and a garden as well as a cafe a kitchen and parking and cycle racks.......................................

What we have now.....................................

CoolTan Arts physical space consists of three workshops, an office, reception kitchen and an amazing gallery area. CoolTan provides a bespoke service mainly to people living in South London although participants and volunteers come from much further afield due to the lack of similar organisations. We provide a range of educational and social arts activities at mixed levels helping participants increase confidence in their social and personal skills. We endeavour to fill the need for accessible creative workshops taught by professionals and leading to positive outcomes.

Our work directly impacts upon the lives of those who we come in contact with, either through teaching, participating or being a paid member of staff. We aim to tackle the isolation and discrimination that our participants face through the workshops, exhibitions, public events and volunteering opportunities that we offer. We provide a range of educational and social arts activities relevant to the needs of local people. CoolTan s workshops are accessible to those with mental health issues. CoolTan's volunteering opportunities and events are open to all sections of the community and are all free.

We try to breakdown social barriers by bringing different people together and developing art activities that celebrate different cultures and individuality. By creating such a multicultural space CoolTan Arts breaks down barriers and tackles discrimination and fear head on. Our emphasis on inclusion and diversity is well demonstrated in our five web sites:

What could your donation do?

£5 buys enough milk for participants’ tea and coffee for one week.

£10 buys enough canvas and paints for one person attending one workshop a week.

£15 buys enough silk for a person in a batik workshop to make a garment.

£20 just about covers our tea and coffee bill for a week.

£75 would pay for a small one-off workshop.

£1,500 would pay for one person to attend a weekly workshop for a year (46 sessions).

The numbers of people wanting to attend CoolTan Arts have soared since April 2008 but due to the removal of our toilets and facilities by the landlord our numbers have been seriously affected.
