JCB ATTACHMENTS LANDS END TO JOHN O’GROATS CHALLENGE

(For more images click on the team donation page)

Andy Hayes, Dave Allen, John Salt and Paul Hartshorn are on an epic challenge to complete Lands End to John O’Groats as a group cycle in 9 days. All four team members are using their holiday to complete this challenge, with all of them cycling the whole route. Along the way they are being tracked with a Livelink system, supplied by JCB service and being supported by Joshua Burnett.

With hotels booked for each day and sponsorship coming in, there is no going back. They must complete the average 100miles a day to reach John O’Groats on Saturday 30th June.

Please help boost moral as the weather begins to turn against them with yet another day of heavy rain, by donating what you can on here or by texting the teams Vodafone JustTextGiving number.

Day 1

After a 4am start the team arrived in Land’s End ready for the obligatory photos, to prove they actually started in the right place, and on the starting line by 11:50. Their progress is also being tracked via Livelink.

With the weather on their side they quickly covered the short distance of 65miles to the first hotel.

 Average speed: 17.6mph

Miles covered to date: 63

Day 2

Cycling from 8:30am, with a minor detour up a hill to a dead end, 107miles were covered by 6pm. Weather has mostly been kind with a small amount of rain over the last ten miles. The size of the challenge is now being realised, with even the bikes beginning to complain. Paul has had failure on the front change lever and is now stuck on the large ring for the remainder of the journey. Despite that moral remains high as the hills continue.

Miles covered to date: 170

Day 3

After an earlier start of 7:30am the team cycled through Bristol, Avonmouth and over the Severn Bridge to Chepstow and into Wales, where they were greeted with yet more hills and a blustery head wind. Then it was on through Hereford to Ludlow, finishing at 6pm. Another 105 miles complete with no punctures or falls.

Miles covered to date: 275

Day 4

Woken up by the sun this morning they team set off before 7:30am heading for Preston. Despite the weather being on their side after covering another 113 miles by 6:30pm, today seemed like a long one.

New top speeds were reached, with and average speed of 15.5 mph and still no more breakages or falls. Moral is still good but a boost on the donations would help.

Miles covered to date: 388

Day 5

After a slightly later start, leaving Preston at 8am (due to the hotel not serving breakfast till 7:30) they set of for Shap hill, and a gruelling climb. Today saw the team pass the half way mark and head into Scotland.

The weather has started to turn, resulting in they guys digging out waterproofs for the afternoon as they finished the 98 mile day.

Miles covered to date: 486

 WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?
We are raising much needed funds for the NSPCC’s "Reaching out to children in Staffordshire" Appeal. The appeal is enabling the NSPCC to purchase and refurbish a building in Stoke-on-Trent which will help the charity to provide support for vulnerable young people at risk of cruelty. New innovative services are helping children whose lives have been harmed by sexual abuse, neglect or physical abuse, as well vulnerable children under the age of one. The NSPCC team also work in partnership with local authorities to help children who are in their care.  Funds donated to our Challenge will make a large difference to the lives of vulnerable children in Staffordshire so please give generously!
