Story

Oxfordshire Community Foundation (CIO No 1151621) hosts and manages the charitable funds raised by Black Minds Matter UK.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and supporting the Mindshare 2020 Black History Month, Running Challenge.

As this October, marks the 33rd anniversary in the UK for Black History Month. A few of us from Mindshare, decided to group together to:

  1. Celebrate Black History Month
  2.  Raise the profile of Mindshare's Roots Society
  3.  Most importantly raise money for two selected charities.

We thought, the best way to do this (while of course social distancing) would be to organise a running challenge - and then ask our lovely friends, family and colleagues to donate/sponsor us!

There is 19 of us in total, and we have all pledged to run 33km per week in October. Making that 2,508km collectively by the end of October.

We have chosen two charities to support, Black Minds Matter UK and The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.

Please see below, information on the wonderful work of Black Minds Matter:

Black Minds Matter UK understands more than ever the effects of racial discrimination across this country. For many black people the cases of violence against individuals such as George Floyd in the USA and the many historic incidents in the UK are deeply triggering. Treating mental health must be a priority in the fight for equality and welfare of black people in the UK.

This is a state of emergency for black people's well being, and we need your support to help us bridge the gap so that access can become available.

Our mission is to connect Black individuals and families with free mental health services — by professional Black therapists, specifically for Black trauma. To make this happen, we want to make mental health topics more relevant and accessible for all Black people in the U.K., removing the stigma and remodeling the services to be relevant for the Black community.

The Black Minds Matter U.K. fund is therefore used to cover the cost of the services you need most — including up to 12 sessions of therapy. With a growing collective of certified, professional, culturally competent therapists — beginning your journey towards improved mental health is as easy as browsing the collective, choosing a therapist and arranging a consultation. Your therapist will then contact us to confirm your assessment, and we’ll cover the cost. So there’s no paperwork for you, just a safe space for your journey to begin
