Running The Boston Marathon For CrossReach Bluebell PND Services - Tanya’s Inspirational Story

Staff member and mum of 2 young girls, Tanya (43) is making a self-funded trip with her husband and family to Boston in April this year.

Why?  She’s been training to run in the Boston Marathon!

Tanya is well known amongst her colleagues for her many energetic exploits, including running or cycling in to work on a daily basis.  Having worked in our ConneXions service for almost 2 years and having heard she is hoping to raise funds for our Bluebell PND Service, we decided it was time to hear more of Tanya’s story and of her motivation to generously support charities in this way.  We weren’t disappointed!

Having been diagnosed with Epilepsy and having been told her medication made motherhood virtually impossible, Tanya immersed herself in setting physically demanding goals, whilst raising money for different charities.

When the unexpected happened and she became a mum, her life turned upside down.  Barely recognising herself and confused at the way she felt, she battled on as so many parents do.

One day, when listening to a colleague's presentation on Perinatal Depression, everything she had been experiencing started to make sense...

“The mental well-being of mothers now appears to be less a matter of depression through social isolation and more one of depression brought about through guilt, anxiety and the stress from not feeling good enough as a mother, partner or professional.”
(Paula Nicolson, Professor of Critical Social Health Psychology at Royal Holloway University, London)

“Postpartum depression is a crippling mood disorder, historically neglected in health care, leaving mothers to suffer in fear, confusion, and silence.”
(Postpartum Depression: It isn’t just the blues. Beck, Cheryl Tatano DNSc, CNM, FAAN: AJN American Journal of Nursing.)
