Story

Fire walking is the practice of walking barefoot over hot coals or embers without burning your feet. Humans have been walking barefoot on fire for thousands of years. The first time a fire walk was recorded was 1200BC in India when two Brahmin priests competed to see who could walk the furthest over hot coals. Since then countless other fire walks have been recorded across the globe.

The purpose of fire walking varies culture to culture; some are healing rituals or for meting out justice, others are rites of passage or displays of faith. However there is a common theme in that whatever the purpose the act of walking across fire symbolises bravery, spiritual strength and facing your fears.

We feel there is a lot about Fire walking that chimes with the Amber ethos. In that a central part of our approach is to encourage the young people who come to stay with us that despite the challenges they face they have potential to achieve great things in life. Fire walks are all about finding your inner strength and having the courage to face your fears despite challenges or self-doubt. We are working with a company called 'Blaze - the fire walking experts' who say that taking part in a fire walk helps transform fear and to inspire people to do things they didn't think possible.

Registration is at 6pm, spectators are welcome from 6:45pm. The walk will start at 7.30pm.

The whole event will be run under the watchful eye of Karen Sterling from Blaze who has been fire walking for 28 years and managing Blaze for the last 10. In total she has nearly 2500 fire walking events under her belt. Karen will take all walkers through the 'Learn or Burn' training prior to the challenge itself which is to walk down a 20ft lane of hot embers.

Entry is £25 and all walkers should aim to raise £150 in sponsorship for Ambers work with young people facing homelessness, long term unemployment and mental ill health.

Minimum age is 14 and parental consent is required for under 16s.
