Story

What is The Big 30?

Over the 30 days in June, we are challenging you to do 30 things. It could be once a day or over the course of the month. You might challenge yourself to 30 sit-ups everyday, or 30 climbs of the stairs one day and 30 minutes of yoga the next day. Or you might aim to run a total of 30 miles or grow 30 plants and give them away locally. The creativity is up to you, our fantastic fundraisers. We can't wait to see what you come up with.

Find instructions here for how to set up your Just Giving page for our challenge.

If you are a member of staff at the University engaging in a physical challenge, why not track your progress on the BetterPoints app? This way you can easily donate your points directly to our Parkinson's research.

We hope you'll enjoy taking on this exciting challenge during what is a difficult time. You'll be helping to raise money for essential research into Parkinson's disease. 60,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson's every year. But there still isn't a treatment that gets to the root cause of the disease. That's where you can help.

Join the fight against Parkinson's disease

The University of Sheffield needs your help to carry on their important research into Parkinson's. Every day, our researchers are working to find a cure for this devastating disease.

Two more people are diagnosed every hour, that's 18,000 people every year. Causing a huge loss of physical movement and uncontrollable tremors, the disease will affect 145,000 people in the UK alone in 2020. New treatments are needed to stop Parkinson's in its tracks.

With clinicians and scientists working together at Sheffield, our unique bench-to-bedside approach is a beacon of medical research best practice.

How can your fundraising make a difference?

- £30 could fund two hours of research by our early career scientists

- £60 will help to cover the cost of a clinical trial for a day

- £90 could purchase equipment which helps researchers run 15 experiments to look deeper into Parkinsons patients cells

- £130 could purchase chemicals to help researchers run 20 experiments to understand how the body disposes of damaged cells in Parkinsons patients

- £300 will help fund a patient biopsy so researchers can develop individual treatments

The impact of Sheffield's research

Your support will make a real difference to people with Parkinson's and their families. Our research has the potential to slow or even halt the progression of the disease by:

-> Learning what drives the disease in different people

-> Bringing promising new treatments to clinical trial

-> Developing personalised medicines, tailored to each patients specific type of Parkinson's

Back the next breakthrough

The University of Sheffield is a world-leader in neurological research. Together we can fight this devastating disease.
