Story

In 2022, Denyigba Lorlor Foundation are planting 3,000 native trees in schools and households in the Keta Municipality. Planting trees helps communities prepare for the effects of a warming climate, and by working directly with schools Denyigba hope to inspire the next generation of tree planters. Denyigba's 2022 project builds on the success of their work in 2021, that saw 250 trees planted across two different schools, and approximately 10,000 trees planted along roadsides and in community spaces in the Keta Municipality.

The trees species planted include coconuts, cashew, cassia, acacia, guava, salsap, avocado and mango. These trees provide food, they provide income, the generate shade from the sun and they cool the local environment. Trees contribute to the healthy functioning of the local ecosystem, providing support to biodiversity. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide that help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

When planting in schools, Denyigba provides education on the benefits of planting trees and give students the opportunity to learn how to tend to young saplings. Throughout their time at school, students will be able to see the saplings grow into trees. By planting trees in seven different schools, Denyigba will be reaching 3,716 pupils and 126 teachers. When planting in households, Denyigba are providing families with fruit and nut trees, trees that will provide food and income to families as well as shade from the sun.

Project Timeline:

January - March 2022: Denyigba will begin nursing seeds, with several nurseries established close to the schools location.

April - May 2022: Working with schools, assemblymen and other local stakeholders to prepare for planting. Distributing saplings to planting locations.

June 1st - 9th 2022: Planting 3000 trees in schools and family homes.

After planting, Denyigba continue to monitor and care for the trees for the first two years of their lives.
