Story
Established in 1994, Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) continues to be Arlington’s only provider of comprehensive healthcare services for adults living with a low income and without health insurance. Every year, with the help of over 450 volunteers and 45 full/part-time staff, AFC provides access to comprehensive patient-centered services to approximately 1,500 of our community’s most vulnerable residents.
According to our electronic health record (EHR), 65% of our patients are women (most between ages 40 to 65) and 60% are members of households with children. Two-thirds of AFC patients are Hispanic of any race, and all AFC patients are living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, verified through our annual eligibility screening.
AFC operates six days a week, offering a range of comprehensive healthcare services within our patient-centered medical home. Services are available in person or virtually. Offerings include:
Patient-Centered Primary Care – delivers primary care to almost every AFC patient
Oral Health – performs basic and advanced dental services in an onsite three-chair dental clinic
Vision & Hearing – offers onsite eye exams and eyeglasses, as well as hearing testing and hearing aids through a partnership with the University of Maryland’s Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences
Medical Testing – offers onsite point of care medical testing and a full range of diagnostic testing through a partnership with VHC Health
Specialty Medical Care – connects patients to on and off-site visits with over 120 specialty physicians, including cardiologists and oncologists and a whole range of medical tests at VHC Health
Behavioral Health – integrates services within our primary care setting; offers annual screenings, psychiatric evaluations, medications, and individual counseling and support groups
Pharmacy – fills prescriptions written by staff and volunteer providers; educates patients about their medications
Physical Therapy – helps restore movement and function to individuals with injuries and disabilities
Women’s Health – provides cervical and breast cancer screenings, referrals for diagnostics and treatment, patient education, and comprehensive survivorship services
Social Services and Case Management – conducts patient screenings, referrals, and navigation to address social determinants of health
Nutrition and Fitness – delivers nutrition and exercise counseling, classes, and support groups
Immunizations – educates patients about immunizations and administers vaccines, including COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccines
