Story

About Understanding Autism North West

Individuals with Aspergers syndrome/Autistic Spectrum Conditions (AS/ASCs) are known to be marginalised members of society, who suffer from anxiety related illnesses and depression at a higher rate than the rest of the population. The impact of this on family members can be equally debilitating. A therapeutic service with specialised knowledge to support the mental health and well-being of those with the disability can play a vital role in reducing anxiety related illness, improving self awareness, self understanding and self-esteem, which will increase integration and promote economic and social opportunity.

We offer specialised therapeutic support for adults and children with AS/ASCs and members of their family (parents/partners/ children/siblings/carers). All at Understanding Autism North West have personal and professional experience of the difficulties presented and encountered by individuals with AS/ASCs, which includes the difficulties experienced in accessing adequate and relevant support. The personal and professional experiences of all at Understanding Autism North West underpins a passionate belief that self understanding, acceptance and adjustments are crucial in improving the quality of life for both the individual with AS/ASC and the family surrounding the individual.

Having a counsellor who has a deep and thorough understanding of autism and the issues related to it made an enormous difference. People on the autism spectrum often have difficulty expressing themselves but knowing that the counsellor understood this made it so much easier and removed a lot of the anxiety
