Captain Tom's Gardens at Princess Royal Hospital and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

We are creating some all-year green havens for staff and visitors within our hospitals and would like to dedicate them in memory to Captain Tom.

As a registered charity SaTH Charity makes a positive difference to the patients of The Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal Hospitals. SaTh Charity pays for equipment, patient comforts, staff education and research, which goes above and beyond the funded services provided as standard by the NHS.

Story

Never before has space been so important for our NHS heroes. With social distancing in place, our staff rooms and communal places, such as our restaurants, have reduced capacity meaning theres less room for people to take breaks. Also our staff have told us that being able to take a break from busy wards and departments and enjoy some fresh air outdoors in a calming environment has never been more important

We plan to create two green havens within our hospitals grounds that can be used for staff and patients. With places to sit and relax and landscaped to maximise the benefit of nature, these areas will provide stillness within the busy life of a hospital. We held a public competition to design a garden and appropriately one of our own healthcare scientists Emma Mayho from the Cardiorespiratory team was selected as the winner

Captain Sir Tom Moore was a complete inspiration to the whole country but especially the NHS. It was a time when it was easy for us to feel alone and yet this one smiling gentleman reached out and touched everyones lives and hearts. He also inspired so many people to take on their own extraordinary challenges, from running marathons to swimming lakes, and he gave us all hope. He showed NHS patients and staff who were struggling, that people cared, that they were looking out for them and doing what they could to support them.

We really owe him so much and want to create a permanent tribute to him.
