In the past 21 years, over 21,000 people with epilepsy have died suddenly and died too young. SUDEP Action’s Prevent21 campaign shines a light on this shocking disaster. With a significant change of attitude, culture, and action towards epilepsy - many lives CAN be saved. Knowledge saves lives.

Story

Christopher Tween died from SUDEP in August 2019, just before he was due to begin his studies toward a degree in Psychology at the University of Sussex.

The Christopher Tween Foundation and SUDEP Action are working together to raise vital awareness of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) and epilepsy risk as part of the SUDEP Action Prevent21 campaign. With at least 21 people dying each week from epilepsy in the UK (a majority under the age of 35) the Prevent21 campaign aims to reduce deaths from epilepsy and ensure that critical and potentially lifesaving knowledge and awareness of risk and management of risk are brought to the attention of hundreds and thousands of people.

SUDEP Action is a small national charity which aspires to stop unnecessary deaths from epilepsy and support those who have been bereaved by epilepsy. We represent the voice of the bereaved.

For those who have been bereaved, SUDEP Action provides free, highly specialised counselling and support following the traumatic and sudden death of a loved one to epilepsy. Additional awareness raising and campaigning for improved standards of patient care for those living with epilepsy are also a fundamental part of SUDEP Actions work

SUDEP Action proactively works to make vital, potentially life-saving and award winning safety tools, such as our SUDEP & Seizure Safety Checklist, used by clinicians and other health professionals to create open discussions about epilepsy risk, SUDEP and risk mitigation with patients, and our EpSMon App, a free, downloadable App which helps epilepsy patients self-monitor their epilepsy risks between health appointments, as accessible and widely available as possible.

"My son Chris did not have the opportunity to live his life or fulfill his ambitions. We are all devastated at the loss of such a kind, caring and intelligent young man who had a bright future ahead of him. I know now that the risk of SUDEP is not just likely to occur to people with more frequent seizures, it can happen to anyone with epilepsy. This information is not meant to scare people, but it does allow them to be fully informed of the risks involved and what to do to minimise these risks. The aims are to try to prevent further deaths from SUDEP, to try and stop other families having to deal with this heartbreak and hopefully give more young people back their futures." - Bev High

Chris's Mum Bev has set up The Christopher Tween Foundation in Chris's memory to help raise awareness of SUDEP and epilepsy risk and with a wish that children, young people and their families get the information and support they need to reduce risk and manage their epilepsy, supporting and working alongside the SUDEP Action community of bereaved families.

Funds raised through this partnership will help SUDEP Action ensure that vital risk awareness information is made available to those who may benefit and to raise vital awareness through schools and community groups in the South of England.
