Story
What is Emmies Kitchen?
Emmies kitchen was set up after our daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia and had to spend lots of time in Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital. As a parent it became obvious quite quickly that the availability of food is extremely limited whilst staying at hospital and is often an added pressure for many to access/ afford a wholesome meal.
Children can be in hospital for weeks, months and years - a parent is expected to stay with their child for the duration of their stay - having a huge impact on family finances, relationships and emotional well being .
What we do
Emmies kitchen is provides parents of children staying in the RMCH with a free, individually ordered ,tasty take away meal and snack bags at the moment this is offered once a week. Friday night take away
We also offer a monthly well being drop in for parents and carers - a time to chat and unwind.
Our vision
It is apparent that looking after the well being of parents is imperative in their childs recovery. Emmies Kitchen hopes that by recognising the emotional and social needs of parents with a seriously ill child, we will be able to offer a more holistic view of the family. As by ensuring that the parents are supported practically and emotionally they would be more able to cope and care for their child.
Throughout COVID we changed our offer to meet the needs of parents staying in Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital , over the last 5 years we have provided over 50,000 hot meals and snack bags . We are reliant on a small tesm of dedicated volunteers who recognise how important it is to continue this support to hospital families, the charity is entirely run through donations with no paid members of staff. .
Each meal on average costs £6, every meal is hugely appreciated and allows families to focus on their poorly child whilst having access to a nourishing hot meal.
